The Imo State Police Command has demoted Sergeant Anayo Ekezie to the rank of Corporal following his involvement in the assault of a middle-aged man along the Owerri-Aba Road.
The incident, which was captured in a viral video, sparked public outrage and prompted an internal investigation.
Police spokesperson Henry Okoye confirmed on Wednesday night that the three officers involved had been identified and subjected to an orderly room trial.
Those found culpable include Inspector Ofem Obongha, Inspector Obinna Okereke, and Sergeant Ekezie, all of the Safer Highway Unit.
While Ekezie received a demotion for using a smoke gunner during the assault, Inspectors Obongha and Okereke were issued severe reprimands for failing in their supervisory roles.
Commissioner of Police, CP Aboki Danjuma, condemned the officers’ conduct, calling it a violation of the Nigeria Police Force’s Code of Conduct and a breach of human rights.
He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to maintaining professional standards and enforcing disciplinary measures against misconduct.
