The Ondo State Police Command has arrested Adekolajo Aladeseyi for unlawfully installing himself as the Olujare of Ijare, a traditional title in Ifedore Local Government Area.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, four other individuals involved in the unauthorized installation were also taken into custody.
Commissioner of Police Olutokunbo Afolabi confirmed the arrest, stating that it was carried out on the orders of the state government.
He explained that Aladeseyi’s installation did not follow due legal procedures and lacked the approval of both the local and state governments.
“This action was necessary to uphold peace and prevent potential unrest in the community,” Afolabi said.
“The suspects acted unlawfully, and their conduct could have triggered violence.”
He added that the suspects would face prosecution upon the completion of investigations.
The arrest follows objections from some kingmakers and royal families in Ijare, who claimed they were not involved in the selection process, as mandated by tradition and law.
The position of Olujare has been vacant since the passing of Oba Adebamigbe Oluwagbemigun, Kokotiri II, four years ago.
The Olujare is recognized as a first-class traditional ruler in Ondo State.
