Ahmad Lawan denies involvement in arrest of critic over water project

Former Senate President Ahmad Lawan has denied any involvement in the arrest of Ishe’u Ibrahim Jadda, a constituent reportedly detained for criticizing the Gashua Water Supply Project.

In response to a report by an online news outlet linking him to the arrest, Lawan, who represents Yobe North Senatorial District, issued a statement on Saturday through his media aide, Dr. Ezrel Tabiowo, describing the claims as “malicious” and “false.”

The report alleged that Jadda was arrested after publicly criticizing the newly launched water project in Gashua, a town within Lawan’s constituency.

However, the senator strongly refuted the accusation, emphasizing his longstanding commitment to democratic principles, free speech, and open dialogue.

“Senator Ahmad Lawan has never, and will never, use his office or influence to suppress dissent or intimidate critics,” the statement said.

“To suggest that a man of such pedigree would orchestrate the arrest of a constituent for exercising his constitutional right to free speech is not only absurd but an affront to his decades of principled service.”

Defending the Gashua Water Supply Project, Lawan explained that the initiative was launched in response to a serious public health concern, as Gashua reportedly has one of the highest rates of kidney disease in Yobe State, linked to unsafe drinking water.

He reaffirmed his openness to public input and constructive criticism, noting that such feedback is essential for improving service delivery.

The senator also challenged the publication to provide credible evidence supporting its claims and assured that he remains committed to delivering meaningful representation to the people of Yobe North.
