Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has approved the immediate recruitment of 17,600 security guards to strengthen safety measures in public schools across the state.

The announcement was made Monday in a statement by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Tofa.

Speaking at an event in Kano, Governor Yusuf said the new personnel will be deployed evenly, with 400 guards assigned to each of the state’s 44 local government areas.

The move, he said, is aimed at protecting students and teachers and ensuring a safe and conducive learning environment.

“This decision underscores our administration’s resolve to protect our children and educators from growing security challenges.

We cannot let fear disrupt the education of our future leaders,” the governor stated.

The guards will undergo proper training and will be stationed at strategic points, including school entrances.

They will monitor for suspicious activities and work in coordination with existing security agencies.

The recruitment forms part of Governor Yusuf’s broader education reform agenda.

Other ongoing initiatives include the installation of solar power in 200 public schools, the distribution of teaching materials, and the planned permanent employment of qualified teachers under the Better Education Service Delivery for All (BESDA) programme.

Reaffirming his administration’s priorities, Governor Yusuf said security, education, and youth empowerment remain at the core of his governance strategy.

He also appealed to parents, traditional leaders, and local communities to support government efforts in ensuring safe and quality education for every child in the state.
