Witness submits death certificate of Ahmed Gulak, allegedly killed by IPOB

A prosecution witness identified as BBB on Wednesday submitted a certified true copy of the death certificate of Ahmed Gulak, a former political adviser to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, during the trial of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Gulak was allegedly killed in 2021 by IPOB members for defying a sit-at-home directive.

The document was tendered before Justice James Omotosho at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

BBB, the second prosecution witness, is testifying under protection due to the sensitive nature of the case.

Government counsel Adegboyega Awomolo requested to ask an additional question during the hearing, although the session was originally scheduled for cross-examination. Kanu’s lead counsel, Kanu Agabi, did not object, and the judge granted permission.

Awomolo asked the witness to confirm a previous claim that Kanu’s radio broadcast had called for a sit-at-home order, which allegedly led to Gulak’s killing.

The witness affirmed this and stated he had been involved in the investigation into Gulak’s death.

He presented the death certificate, dated July 18, 2021, and issued by the police, as a certified true copy of Gulak’s medical report.

The document was shown to the defence counsel, who raised no objections. Justice Omotosho admitted it as evidence and marked it as Exhibit PWJ.

Awomolo further requested that the document be read aloud in court, a request also granted by the judge.
