Suspected armed herders kill 43 in renewed attacks on communities

At least 43 people were killed on Sunday when suspected armed herders launched coordinated attacks on two communities in Benue State’s Gwer West and Apa Local Government Areas.

The latest violence occurred less than a week after similar attacks in Gwer West claimed more than 40 lives, including that of a mobile police officer.

According to local sources, the attackers struck Tse Antswam, a settlement near Naka town, around 7 p.m., firing indiscriminately at residents.

In a separate but simultaneous assault, Edikwu Ankpali community in Apa LGA was also attacked.

A resident of Apa, who identified himself only as Tony, said more than 25 people were killed in the Edikwu Ankpali attack.

“The bodies are being prepared for burial,” he told our correspondent on Monday.

In Gwer West, the traditional ruler of the Nagi community, Ter Daniel Abomtse, confirmed the assault and described it as a guerrilla-style operation.

“As of this morning, we’ve recovered 18 bodies, with many others injured,” he said. “Some victims may not survive due to the severity of their injuries. People fled into the bush or even jumped into wells to escape.”

He added that the attack occurred near a military checkpoint along the Naka-Makurdi road.

Victor Ormini, Chairman of Gwer West LGA, expressed deep frustration. “Exactly a week ago, I reported the killing of over 40 people, including a MOPOL officer. Now Naka has been attacked. We’ve recovered more than 14 bodies so far,” he said.

In Apa LGA, Chairman Adams Ocheiga confirmed the attack and said he was on his way to the affected community for an assessment.

Benue State Police spokesperson, DSP Udeme Edet, also confirmed both incidents. While she did not provide casualty figures, she stated that tactical teams had been deployed to the affected areas and were working to contain the situation.

“I will provide more detailed information once it becomes available,” she added.
