Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested six individuals suspected to be members of a notorious criminal gang during a routine patrol in the metropolis, authorities confirmed on Monday.

The arrests occurred on Thursday during a stop-and-search operation, when officers intercepted an unregistered vehicle exhibiting suspicious behavior.

A search of the vehicle yielded two locally made pistols, 16 rounds of 9mm ammunition, 17 live cartridges, and a 1999 Toyota Camry believed to have been stolen.

The suspects have been identified as Yakubu Oke, 48; Teslim Balogun, 33; Emmanuel Osas, 33; Joseph Abah, 34; Idris Adewunmi, 32; and Opeyemi Kolawole, 28.

A police source said the men were questioned on the spot but failed to provide valid identification or a credible explanation for their activities.

Preliminary investigations linked the suspects to a gang already under surveillance for a series of armed robberies and other violent crimes across Lagos.

Confirming the arrests, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, said in a message:

“Yes, I can confirm that six suspects were arrested. Arms, ammunition, and a suspected stolen vehicle were recovered. The suspects are currently assisting with investigations.”

Hundeyin described the arrests as a significant breakthrough in the Command’s efforts to dismantle criminal networks operating in the state.

“The Commissioner of Police, CP Owohunwa Olatunji, is fully committed to ridding Lagos of criminal elements.

We urge the public to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activities,” he added.

Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial hub, has faced growing challenges related to armed robbery, car theft, and cult violence. In response, the police have intensified intelligence-driven patrols and surveillance operations across the city.

The suspects remain in custody and are said to be cooperating with investigators. Further arrests may follow as the probe continues.

Authorities confirmed the suspects will be charged to court once investigations are complete.

In a statement, CP Owohunwa reaffirmed the Command’s zero-tolerance policy toward crime.

“We are committed to securing every community in Lagos.

Our officers are working day and night to ensure offenders are brought to justice,” the statement said.

The Lagos State Police Command also urged residents to report any suspicious behavior or individuals to the nearest police station or through the emergency hotlines.
