A 43-year-old man in Kwara State lost his life after reportedly jumping into a well under the influence of a hard drug known locally as “Colorado” (Synthetic Cannabinoids).

The incident occurred shortly after Eid-el-Kabir prayers on Friday in the Edun area of Ilorin West Local Government Area.

The deceased, identified as Kareem, was said to have consumed the substance before taking the fatal plunge into a well located at Ile Alapo, Edun.

In a statement issued Saturday, the Head of Media and Publicity for the Kwara State Fire Service, Hassan Adekunle, confirmed the recovery of the body. According to him, a distress call was received at about 10:29 a.m., prompting an immediate response by the fire crew.

“Our officers were swiftly dispatched to the scene, where they recovered the body from the well,” Adekunle said.

The remains were later handed over to Inspector Babatunde Amos of the C Division Police Station in Ilorin, while the authorities await formal identification and collection of the body by the deceased’s family.

Efforts to reach the spokesperson for the Kwara State Police Command, Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, were unsuccessful as she did not respond to calls or messages at the time of filing this report.

Reacting to the incident, Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Falade Olumuyiwa, expressed deep sorrow and used the opportunity to caution the public against drug abuse.

“This is a heartbreaking loss.

We continue to warn residents—especially the youth—about the dangers of drug use. It leads to destructive behavior and tragic consequences,” he said.
