The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has debunked reports suggesting it has registered two new political parties — the “Independent Democrats” and the “Peoples Democratic Movement.”
In a statement shared on its official X account on Wednesday, the commission labeled the report as false and advised the public to ignore it.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the Commission has not registered any new political party,” the statement said.
“The number of registered political parties in Nigeria remains 19. Nothing has been added.”
INEC clarified that both parties mentioned in the report were initially registered in August 2013 but were deregistered in February 2020 in line with Section 225A of the 1999 Constitution.
The commission reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and constitutional compliance in all electoral matters and urged Nigerians to disregard the false report.
