A commercial minibus driver was killed in a tragic road accident early Sunday morning along Old Ipaja Road by Agbotikuyo, en route to Iyana Ipaja in Lagos.

According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the crash involved a fully-loaded 40-foot Mack container truck, which reportedly suffered a brake failure and toppled onto the minibus, commonly referred to as a “Korope.”

In a statement issued by LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Adebayo Taofiq, the agency confirmed the accident and described the scene as “harrowing.”

“The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority deeply regrets to report a fatal road traffic incident that occurred on Sunday, June 22, 2025, involving a containerised truck (MUS 729 XY) that lost control and crushed a commercial minibus,” the statement read.

The impact killed the minibus driver instantly. However, three passengers—two women and a man—were rescued unhurt by LASTMA operatives and immediately handed over to emergency medical responders for care.

The incident caused severe traffic disruptions in the area, affecting major connecting roads such as Shofunde and Olufunlayo.

LASTMA officials swiftly enforced traffic diversions and deployed additional personnel to ease the gridlock and restore order.

Taofiq also confirmed that the truck driver attempted to flee the scene but was quickly apprehended by LASTMA officers.

He was handed over to police personnel from Elere and Area ‘G’ Divisions for further investigation.

Emergency response teams from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), and the Nigeria Police collaborated with LASTMA to clear the scene and fully restore normalcy.

Reacting to the incident, the Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Transportation, Sola Giwa, extended condolences to the family of the deceased and called for stricter adherence to safety regulations by truck operators.

“Truck operators must ensure that all vehicles, especially their braking systems, are thoroughly inspected before hitting the roads,” Giwa said.

“Preventable tragedies like this one highlight the critical need for mechanical diligence and full compliance with safety protocols.”

Giwa reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to enforcing road safety regulations and improving emergency response systems to prevent future occurrences.

LASTMA also urged members of the public to report traffic emergencies or request help using the agency’s toll-free hotline: 0800-00-LASTMA (080000527862).
