Olowo-in-council justifies demolition of Owo memorial park

The Olowo-in-Council has defended the recent demolition of the Memorial Park in Owo, which was erected in honour of victims of the June 5, 2022, terrorist attack at St. Francis Catholic Church.

The Council clarified that the action was carried out at the instance of the Olowo of Owo, His Imperial Majesty, and with the support of the people of the kingdom.

In a statement issued by the Palace, the Council explained that the location of the park—near the palace—was originally opposed by both the Olowo-in-Council and community members when it was first proposed during the administration of the late Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, CON.

The Council said that multiple objections were raised at the time, arguing that the siting of such a monument near the palace was contrary to the long-standing cultural and traditional norms of Owo.

According to the statement, even protests by concerned Owo youths and other stakeholders were ignored by the late governor.

“The enthusiasm shown by the people of Owo and the wave of commendation on various media platforms following the demolition has vindicated the palace’s long-held position,” the statement said.

The Olowo-in-Council also announced plans to release a detailed account of the events leading up to the construction of the Memorial Park and the reasons behind its demolition.

Meanwhile, the Council urged critics of the move to direct any grievances toward the palace rather than the current Governor, Hon. (Dr.) Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, whom it said had no hand in the decision to demolish the park.
