Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the claims made by a retired Superintendent of Police in a viral video concerning inadequate retirement benefits.
The retired officer, who served in the Nigeria Police Force for 35 years and retired on October 1, 2023, expressed disappointment over receiving a total retirement benefit of just ₦2 million.
He further disclosed that the Nigeria Police Pension Board recently informed him his total entitlement was ₦3 million, which included ₦1 million in arrears and ₦2 million as his terminal benefit.
Reacting to the viral video, Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, released a statement on Thursday confirming that the IGP had directed NPF Pensions Limited to urgently investigate the claims, identify any administrative lapses, and take appropriate corrective measures.
“The Nigeria Police Force is not insensitive to the plight of its pensioners, many of whom devoted their lives to national service and public safety,” the statement read.
“The IGP considers the welfare of both serving and retired personnel a top priority.
A reliable and timely pension system is vital for maintaining morale and institutional credibility.”
The IGP acknowledged that while reforms have been made in recent years to improve the police pension system, feedback—such as that from the viral video—is essential in uncovering flaws and prompting needed improvements.
Egbetokun reassured both serving and retired officers, as well as their families, of the Force’s ongoing commitment to enhancing welfare and establishing a pension structure that properly recognises their years of service and sacrifice.
He urged all stakeholders to remain calm and patient as NPF Pensions continues its investigation and works with relevant agencies to implement lasting solutions.
