Farmer rescues newborn buried alive in Kebbi farmland

A farmer in Kebbi State, Kabiru Kamba, has recounted how he miraculously rescued a newborn baby girl buried alive on his farmland in Kamba, Dandi Local Government Area.

Speaking on Monday at his residence in Kamba town during a visit by the state’s Technical Working Group (TWG) on Gender-Based Violence, Kamba described how he discovered the baby last Friday.

According to him, while working on his farm, he noticed an unusual mound of earth that stood out among the regular ridges. “Out of curiosity, I stopped some motorcyclists passing by and asked them to help me dig,” he said.

“As we dug, we uncovered a wrapper buried in the soil, which made me suspicious. I immediately contacted the police at a nearby checkpoint.

They came and dug further, and to our shock, found a newborn baby girl—alive and crying—wrapped in cloth.”

Kamba explained that he took custody of the baby out of compassion and humanity. “In a situation like this, you don’t wait for anyone.

I felt it was my duty to care for her. The Dandi Local Government Council officially handed her over to me, pending the outcome of the police investigation,” he said.

He added that caring for the infant has not been difficult, especially since his wife had just given birth. “We’ve even planned her naming ceremony for Wednesday.

I’ve bought a ram and other items for the event. By Allah’s grace, she will be named then,” he shared.

His wife expressed joy over welcoming the child into their home. “When my husband told me, I was happy. I will care for her just as I would my own baby,” she said.

Leading the TWG delegation, former Permanent Secretary of the State Ministry for Basic and Secondary Education, Hajiya Rafa’atu Hammani, commended the farmer’s bravery and compassion.

She promised to relay the findings of their visit to the Wife of the Governor, Hajiya Zainab-Nasare Idris.

Also speaking, the TWG Secretary, Alhaji Nasiru Idris, said the visit was to show concern, offer prayers of gratitude for the baby’s survival, and praise the heroic act.

He also reaffirmed the group’s commitment to supporting the family and commended the police for their swift response in pursuing the perpetrator.

The TWG team donated several essential items, including baby clothes, soap, diapers, a baby bed, powdered milk, mosquito net, and a mattress.
