Tragedy struck the Dantanoma quarters of Gumel Local Government Area, Jigawa State, as a 30-year-old man, Hussaini Abubakar, allegedly killed his 75-year-old mother, Dahara Mu’azu.
The incident occurred around 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 29, 2025. According to a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Shi’isu Adam, Abubakar reportedly attacked his mother with mud blocks, inflicting fatal head injuries.
She was rushed to the Gumel General Hospital but was confirmed dead by a medical officer on June 30.
Following the report, officers from the Gumel Divisional Police Headquarters arrested the suspect, who is now in custody and cooperating with investigators.
The police say he will be charged to court after a discreet investigation is concluded.
Jigawa State Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmad Abdullahi, condemned the killing as “inhuman, barbaric, and utterly reprehensible.”
He has directed the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to take over the case and ensure justice is served.
The police command expressed deep sorrow over the incident and urged the public to report early signs of mental health issues or domestic violence to prevent such tragedies.
The PPRO reaffirmed the police’s commitment to protecting lives and maintaining law and order across the state.
Community members, shocked by the incident, are calling for swift justice.
A neighbour, Sule Baba, described the killing as “brutal and senseless,” while another resident, Aminu Lawan, urged authorities to address mental health and domestic conflict issues proactively.
