In a surprising resolution to a widely publicized dispute, the families of a young couple in Kano who previously married without parental consent have now agreed to formalize their union through a proper Islamic wedding.
The reconciliation follows a decision by the bride’s father to authorize the Kano Municipal commander of the Hisbah Board to serve as her guardian (waliyyi) for the new marriage ceremony.
This development came after residents of Yakasai, the community where the controversial wedding took place, rallied in support of the couple. Community members raised ₦150,000 to cover the bride price, which was paid into the official account of the Hisbah Board, tasked with overseeing the new marriage process in line with Islamic tradition.
Yusif Garba, who helped coordinate the fundraising, said the community felt a responsibility to guide the couple rather than judge them.
He described their actions as youthful mistakes driven by inexperience, not malice.
Confirming the arrangement, Ustaz Hamidan Tanko Alasaka, Chief Hisbah Commander for Kano Municipal, stated that preparations for the formal wedding are underway.
He assured that the ceremony will now adhere fully to Islamic and cultural requirements.
The couple initially faced backlash after a 22-year-old groom and his 16-year-old bride held a private wedding officiated by friends, without parental involvement.
The Hisbah Board had previously nullified the union due to its failure to meet Islamic legal standards.
With both families now on board, the couple is expected to be officially wed under proper religious guidance in the coming days.
