A 300-level student of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, Tochi Attah, has died after reportedly slumping during a football match on campus.
The tragic incident occurred on Monday near the Elmada Hostel area, where Tochi—popularly known among friends as “T-Funds”—was playing with others before he suddenly collapsed.
Tochi was a student in the Department of Microbiology and had recently begun transitioning to a medical-related course before his untimely death.
He was also the younger brother of Dr. Simon Attah, the All Progressives Congress (APC) Chairman for Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area in Enugu State.
News of his death was made public in a statement released by the President of Useh Youths, Sabastine Aku, on behalf of the Attah family and the Useh community.
“With heavy hearts but total submission to the will of God, the Attah family and the entire Useh Village announce the sudden passing of our beloved son, brother, and friend, Tochi Martins (a.k.a ‘T-Funds Exchange’),” the statement read. “He passed away suddenly while playing football. We pray God grants his soul eternal rest and comforts his family in this difficult time.”
Speaking on the incident, UNIZIK’s Chief Safety Officer, Ken Chukwurah, confirmed that Tochi was a registered student of the university, though not a resident of Elmada Hostel.
“The incident happened on Monday, and the university is fully aware. He was a 300-level student.
We are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding his death to understand exactly what happened,” Chukwurah said.
The university community has been thrown into mourning following the loss of the promising young student, as tributes continue to pour in from friends and colleagues.
