The management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, Anambra State, has confirmed the death of Miss Isabella Ajana, a 100-level Law student, and has initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
Isabella passed away on Friday, July 4, at the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, four days after being admitted due to a medical emergency allegedly caused by being locked out of her hostel room.
The incident reportedly began on the night of Friday, June 27, when Isabella and her roommates were locked out of their room at Emalda Hostel after mistakenly leaving their key inside.
Efforts to obtain a spare key were unsuccessful, as the custodian was said to be out of town and only returned on Monday, June 30.
According to hostel sources, Isabella, a Type 1 Diabetes patient, had her insulin and other essential medications locked in the room.
Her health began to deteriorate by Sunday night, and although she eventually gained access to her medication on Monday, her condition had already worsened significantly.
“She was initially taken to the UNIZIK Medical Centre, but due to inadequate facilities, she was referred to the teaching hospital,” one source said. “Though she showed some improvement by Thursday, she tragically passed away the following day.”
The news of her death was withheld from the public until Tuesday, July 8, reportedly at the request of her family.
