The body of former President Muhammadu Buhari departed London on Tuesday morning aboard a Nigerian Air Force aircraft, en route to Daura, Katsina State, for burial.
Vice President Kashim Shettima is currently in London, heading a top-level Federal Government delegation overseeing documentation and logistics for the repatriation of Buhari’s remains.
Information Minister Mohammed Idris, during a press briefing in Abuja on Monday, confirmed that President Bola Tinubu will personally receive the late president’s body upon arrival in Katsina.
The remains are expected to land by noon, with a brief military ceremony scheduled at the airport before being transported to Daura for the Jana’iza (funeral prayer) and interment at the late president’s residence.
President Tinubu has directed that condolence registers be opened across all federal ministries, departments, and agencies, as well as Nigerian embassies and missions worldwide.
Another register will be opened at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja.
According to Idris, world leaders have continued to send condolence messages, reflecting Buhari’s global influence and legacy.
To ensure a dignified and well-coordinated burial, Tinubu has set up an Inter-Ministerial Committee led by Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume. The committee will work closely with the Katsina State Government and Buhari’s family.
In addition, 25 Federal Executive Council members have been directed to attend the burial rites in Katsina and remain in Daura for the Third-Day prayers on Wednesday.
