A prominent member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Joe Igbokwe, has criticised Nigerians who publicly celebrated the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing their actions as shameful and disrespectful.
DAILY POST earlier reported mixed reactions across the country following the announcement of Buhari’s death on Sunday by presidential aide Bayo Onanuga.
While some mourned the loss, others took to social media and the streets in apparent celebration, accusing the late president of causing widespread poverty and hardship during his administration.
In response, Igbokwe took to his official Facebook page to express disappointment at the reactions from certain quarters.
He questioned why the late leader, who once governed the nation, was being mocked in death.
“Our stupidity is getting to the point of no return,” Igbokwe wrote. “We have just added another terrible character to our tradition by mocking the dead as if we will live for 1,000 years. I pray that even this ugly and horrible behavior will pass away.”
Buhari’s body is expected to arrive in Nigeria for burial in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, on Tuesday.
His funeral is scheduled to be conducted in accordance with Islamic rites.
