The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a man for allegedly assaulting his wife, who had given birth just four days earlier, leaving her unconscious and in critical condition.

According to a statement issued on Friday by the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA), the victim is currently receiving emergency medical care, with sources indicating she has been placed on oxygen.

The incident came to light after a video of the assault went viral on social media, prompting public outrage and swift intervention by authorities.

In the footage shared by an X (formerly Twitter) user, the suspect was seen being arrested while an onlooker claimed the beating occurred in front of the couple’s newborn and the woman’s mother.

“News just got to me that this man brutally assaulted his wife, who just gave birth four days ago. He beat her until she passed out and is now in critical condition, currently receiving emergency medical attention,” the post read.

During initial police interrogation, the suspect admitted to having a dispute with his wife but evaded direct questions about the alleged beating.

In the background of the video, another individual could be heard saying, “She is on oxygen right now, she can’t breathe.”

The DSVA acknowledged the role of concerned citizens in flagging the incident and reiterated the state government’s zero-tolerance stance on domestic and sexual violence.

The agency pledged to monitor the investigation closely and provide updates as the case unfolds.
