The Rivers State Police Command has arrested a 41-year-old pastor, Ifediorah Onyeibor Joseph, for allegedly subjecting about 20 children to inhumane treatment during a church programme in Emeka community, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area.
Police spokesperson, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, said the arrest followed the circulation of a video on social media showing children, aged between five and nine, being physically disciplined as part of what the pastor described as “spiritual cleansing.”
According to the police, the incident occurred during a three-day church event.
Acting on intelligence, officers stormed the premises, rescued the children, and arrested the pastor along with several church members.
“Preliminary investigations revealed that the pastor claimed he was acting under divine instruction.
A detailed inquiry is ongoing to establish the full circumstances,” the police statement read.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, condemned the act and urged members of the public to remain calm while the investigation continues.
He encouraged residents to report any incidents of abuse or suspicious activities to the nearest police station.
The police assured that the safety and welfare of all residents, particularly minors, remains a top priority for the command.
