JUST IN: Retired soldiers stage fresh protest over unpaid entitlements

Retired Nigerian soldiers on Thursday resumed street demonstrations in Abuja to demand the payment of their outstanding benefits.

The former servicemen had earlier suspended their protest on August 4 following assurances from the Ministries of Defence and Finance that their entitlements would be settled by August 10.

But gathered again at the Ministry of Finance headquarters in the Federal Capital Territory, the ex-soldiers accused the authorities of neglect and reneging on their promises.

One of the protesters, popularly known as Mama G, said the group returned to the streets after repeated assurances failed to materialise.

“We are here because the promises made to us were never fulfilled. We had no choice but to return to the streets. This time around, the protest will be massive,” she said.

This is not the first time the group has demonstrated.

In recent years, retired military personnel have repeatedly staged protests in Abuja and other parts of the country, alleging poor treatment and abandonment by the government.

As of press time, the Ministry of Defence, Defence Headquarters and Military Pension Board had yet to issue an official response.
