Security personnel attached to the Sole Administrator of Rivers State, Vice Admiral Ibok Ibas (rtd), on Wednesday staged a protest within the Government House premises in Port Harcourt over alleged nonpayment of their entitlements.
As reported by Vanguard, the protest, which briefly disrupted activities, erupted as the Administrator’s convoy was being prepared for his urgent trip to Abuja. Witnesses said the aides mistook the departure as a possible relocation of Ibas to the federal capital without settling outstanding allowances.
According to sources, the aggrieved operatives, some of whom were captured in videos circulating on social media, threatened to block the Administrator’s movement while chanting demands for their payments.
The commotion attracted the attention of senior security officials who intervened and appealed to the protesters to remain calm, assuring them that Ibas was only traveling temporarily and would return.
Although the situation was later brought under control, tension lingered around the Government House.
As of press time, Ibas’ convoy was still stationed at the Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa, awaiting his return from an undisclosed emergency meeting in Abuja.
The Rivers State Government has yet to issue an official statement on the matter.
