The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Shamsideen Adio, for allegedly beating a dispatch rider to death during a street altercation on Lagos Island.

The incident occurred along Tapa Street, where an argument reportedly broke out after the dispatch rider was accused of scratching Adio’s vehicle.

Eyewitnesses said the situation quickly escalated, with Adio allegedly attacking the rider.

He was later joined by colleagues, who descended on the victim.

Journalist Chris Nwandu, who shared a video of the assault on social media, described Adio as notorious for violence against commercial transport operators.

“He mercilessly beat a dispatch rider to a pulp.

“We are reliably informed that he often assaults tricycle operators and even sent one to the hospital days ago,” Nwandu alleged.

A police source confirmed to reporters on Thursday that the rider died from injuries sustained in the attack.

“The victim died from the injuries and the suspect has been arrested.

He is now at the State Criminal Investigation Department,” the officer disclosed.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, was unreachable for official comment as of the time of filing this report.

The case comes months after a similar high-profile assault case in Ogun State, where the suspended traditional ruler of Orile Ifo, Oba Abdulsemiu Ogunjobi, was arraigned for allegedly attacking a 70-year-old chief.
