The Lagos State Police Command says it has restored calm at Tejuosho Market Phase II, Surulere, after hoodlums staged a violent protest under the pretext of a power outage.

The attackers reportedly vandalised parts of a commercial bank within the market and attempted to overrun policemen stationed on guard duty.

Operatives of the Police Mobile Force were said to have repelled the assault, preventing the hoodlums from gaining access to both the bank and the nearby police post.

In a statement issued by the Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Babasuyi B. Oluseyi, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, the Command confirmed that 18 suspects were arrested at the scene.

The statement noted that the unrest began around 2:30 p.m. after a distress call alerted authorities to attacks on traders, goods, and property.

Reinforcement teams comprising conventional officers and tactical squads were immediately deployed to secure the market.

Normal trading activities later resumed, while the police assured that investigations were underway to track other perpetrators.

CP Jimoh, through the statement, warned that assaults on security personnel and destruction of property would not be tolerated, adding that the arrested suspects remain in custody and would be prosecuted once investigations are concluded.
