The Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, has recalled how he survived a five-day abduction by armed men in 2008, describing it as one of several attempts on his life.
Amaewhule shared the experience on Sunday during a thanksgiving service at All Saints Anglican Church, Eliozu, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, held to mark his 52nd birthday.
He said his reflection was not only about celebrating another year of life but also about acknowledging God’s protection over him despite repeated threats.
“Some people planned to take my life within the past year, but God did not allow them,” the Speaker said.
Narrating the incident, Amaewhule explained that he was abducted after a church service in 2008 by gunmen who had attended the same service before trailing him home.
He said the attackers overpowered his security guard and whisked him away to a forest hideout, where he was held for five days.
“They tied me up, placed thorns under my feet, inflicted injuries on my head and body, and fed me with only biscuits while moving me from one spot to another. I almost bled to death,” he recounted.
Expressing gratitude, Amaewhule said his survival was evidence of divine preservation. “When God does things for you, it is important to appreciate Him for more,” he added.
