BREAKING: ASUU gives FG 14 days to meet demands or face strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government to address long-standing demands or risk a nationwide strike.

The decision followed a National Executive Council meeting held on Sunday at the University of Abuja.

In a statement personally signed by ASUU National President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, the union accused the government of neglecting the university system and failing to respond to its concerns despite repeated engagements.

“ASUU has given the Federal Government an ultimatum of fourteen days to resolve these issues.

Failure to do so may compel the union to embark on a two-week warning strike, which could escalate into an indefinite industrial action,” the statement read.

The Federal Government had earlier constituted a committee, chaired by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Abel Enitan, to review ASUU’s proposals and proffer solutions aimed at stabilising the university system. However, no progress has been announced.

ASUU’s demands include the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement, provision of revitalisation funds for public universities, payment of outstanding salary arrears, and the establishment of sustainable funding mechanisms.
