Former Edo State governor and senator representing Edo North, Adams Oshiomhole, has urged ex-President Goodluck Jonathan not to succumb to pressure to contest the 2027 presidential election, warning that doing so could harm his political legacy.
Oshiomhole gave the advice during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, where he argued that only those who do not wish Jonathan well would encourage him to return to the race.
“How can Jonathan be a threat? We defeated him before, when the PDP was truly PDP,” Oshiomhole said. “If a man had the PDP at its peak, I think it is only his enemies that will push him into the ring. That may not be helpful to him.”
The former APC national chairman added that Jonathan had successfully carved a respected image for himself since leaving office in 2015, and should focus on maintaining that reputation.
“I think he has managed to demonstrate that out of power, you can be relevant and truly at peace.
If I were him, I would spend the rest of my life consolidating that relevance, which he has already found,” he said.
Oshiomhole also asserted that the All Progressives Congress (APC) would defeat Jonathan again if he chose to contest in 2027.
Jonathan, who was the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2015, lost to the late President Muhammadu Buhari of the APC, marking the first time an incumbent president was defeated in Nigeria’s democratic history.
