Chairman of the Ondo State House Committee on Public Accounts, Otunba Moyinolorun Ogunwumiju, has reaffirmed the commitment of the State Assembly to deepening transparency and accountability through the amendment of the Ondo State Public Audit Law 2021.

Ogunwumiju spoke during a stakeholders’ meeting held on Monday at the Assembly complex, where discussions centred on proposed amendments to the law aimed at strengthening fiscal discipline and promoting good governance.

The session, declared open by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Olamide Oladiji, who was represented by his deputy, Rt. Hon. Ololade Gbegudu, drew participants from the executive arm, the Office of the Auditor-General, civil society organisations, and other key institutions.

Ogunwumiju, who also serves as the Parliamentary Secretary of the Assembly, noted that the Public Audit Law was first enacted in 2017 under a World Bank-assisted reform programme and reviewed in 2021 under the SFTAS initiative.

He stressed the need for continuous updates to ensure relevance and alignment with global standards.

He said the meeting demonstrated the legislature’s resolve to promote public accountability through inclusive lawmaking that accommodates the views of critical stakeholders.

“Laws must be reviewed from time to time to close gaps, address new realities, and meet global standards,” he stated.

The lawmaker commended the Speaker for his leadership and colleagues for their cooperation, describing their collective efforts as vital to building a transparent and accountable system.

Ogunwumiju assured that the Public Accounts Committee would continue to champion reforms that ensure prudent use of public funds and strengthen citizens’ trust in government institutions.
