A viral video has shown Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, playfully instructing his newly inaugurated commissioners to always wear the “Asiwaju cap” to Council meetings.
The cap is the trademark headgear associated with President Bola Tinubu.
In the clip circulating on social media, Okpebholo told the officials that any commissioner who shows up without the cap would be denied entry into the meeting.
“If you’re coming to exco meeting without wearing Asiwaju cap, you’re going back,” the governor said, drawing laughter from those present.
The comment has sparked mixed reactions online.
While some Nigerians saw the statement as a lighthearted expression of political loyalty, others interpreted it as symbolic of the deepening culture of political identification in Nigeria.
Observers suggest the governor’s remark could reflect efforts by some state officials to demonstrate closer alignment with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) as the 2027 elections draw closer.
The video, which has attracted thousands of views across social media platforms, continues to stir conversations about political symbolism and loyalty in governance.
