The Kano State Police Command has narrated an unusual encounter involving a man who visited its headquarters to inquire whether it was lawful to offer his wife ₦2 million for her approval to marry a second wife.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, disclosed the incident in a Facebook post on Saturday, describing it as one of the most peculiar requests the Command has received.
According to Kiyawa, the man approached the police at the Bompai Headquarters, explaining that his wife had refused to consent to his plan to take another wife. He reportedly sought the police’s advice on whether it would be illegal to persuade her with money to give her approval.
Quoting the man, Kiyawa wrote: “A man has come to Bompai (Police headquarters) saying his wife refused to allow him to marry a second wife. He is inquiring whether it is legal to offer her ₦2 million to consent to the marriage. He was asking if it is against the law or not.”
Kiyawa, however, did not disclose the response or legal guidance the police gave to the man.
The revelation has since sparked widespread reactions on social media, with many Nigerians expressing mixed views. While some found the man’s action amusing, others criticized it as an attempt to commercialize marital consent.
