The Enugu State Police Command has arrested three suspects allegedly involved in the vandalism of high-voltage power cables in Aninri Local Government Area of the state.

In a statement on Friday, the command’s spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe, identified the suspects as Chukwu Kelvin, 25; Kenechukwu Ude, 25; and Uche Nwankwo, 28.

Ndukwe said the trio was intercepted by operatives of the Distress Response Squad (DRS) during a routine stop-and-search operation along the Enugu–Port Harcourt Expressway around 4:48 a.m. on October 20, 2025.

According to the police, the suspects were conveying vandalised aluminium cables hidden under cassava leaves in a white minibus with registration number ENU 450 XK.

Items recovered from them include one large cable cutter, two pairs of rubber gloves, and a bag containing clothes.

Upon interrogation, the suspects reportedly confessed to vandalising the cables from electric poles along Ukete Road in the Oduma community and were transporting them to the New Artisan Market in Enugu for sale.

The state Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, reiterated the command’s resolve to clamp down on vandals and other criminals sabotaging public infrastructure.

He urged residents to continue supporting the police through timely information sharing, assuring that the suspects would be charged to court after investigations.

PUNCH Online had earlier reported on March 24, 2025, that three suspects were also arrested in connection with the vandalism of power line installations in Agbogugu, Enugu State, following a joint effort between community members and law enforcement agencies.
