The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has postponed the screening of aspirants vying for national offices ahead of its 2025 Elective National Convention, earlier scheduled for Tuesday, October 28.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Chairman of the National Convention Organising Committee (NCOC) and Governor of Adamawa State, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, said the postponement was due to “unforeseen circumstances.”
Fintiri assured that a new date for the exercise would be announced soon and expressed regret over any inconvenience the postponement might have caused. He said, “A new date will be communicated once fixed.
The NCOC regrets any inconvenience caused by the postponement.”
The PDP had on October 25 named a 13-member National Convention Screening Committee chaired by former Ondo State governorship candidate and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Eyitayo Jegede, to vet aspirants ahead of the convention.
The postponement comes amid fresh political manoeuvring within the opposition party, following the declaration of interest by a former governor of Jigawa State, Alhaji Sule Lamido, to contest for the position of national chairman.
Lamido’s announcement followed an earlier endorsement of former Minister Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, as the northern consensus candidate for the chairmanship position.
However, some factions within the party, including allies of Lamido and former Rivers State governor Nyesom Wike, have rejected the endorsement, alleging that the selection process lacked proper consultation.
The development underscores growing tension within the PDP, which in recent weeks has witnessed a series of internal defections and leadership disputes ahead of its convention.
