Veterans demand apology from Wike over verbal attack on naval officer

A coalition of Nigerian military veterans has called on the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to publicly apologise to a naval officer whom he allegedly insulted during a confrontation at a disputed land site in Abuja.

The demand follows a viral video showing the former Rivers State governor engaging in a heated exchange with some naval personnel during an enforcement visit to the Gaduwa District of the FCT.

In the footage, Wike was seen questioning the presence of naval officers allegedly providing security at the location, which he claimed was under illegal development.

The officers, however, maintained that they were acting under proper directives and that the land belonged to a former Chief of Naval Staff.

The encounter quickly escalated, with the minister reportedly using abusive language on one of the officers.

Reacting to the incident, the Coalition of Military Veterans, in a statement by its spokesperson, Abiodun Durowaiye-Herberts, condemned Wike’s conduct, describing it as unbecoming of a public office holder.

He said, “How can a minister of the Federal Republic call a commissioned officer ‘a fool’ in public? Such behaviour is irresponsible and disrespectful to the institution of the Nigerian Armed Forces.”

Durowaiye-Herberts noted that a uniformed officer represents the authority of the Nigerian state, adding that any act of verbal assault against such personnel undermines public confidence in government institutions.

The group further warned against any attempt to punish the naval officer involved in the incident, threatening to mobilise nationwide protests if such action is taken.

“If for any reason the officer is sanctioned, we will occupy the office and residence of the FCT Minister.

Military veterans will not tolerate intimidation of serving officers for doing their lawful duties,” Durowaiye-Herberts stated.

He urged Wike to show humility by tendering an apology to the officer and the Nigerian military community.

“Wike’s outburst was unnecessary and undignified.

As a leader, he should apologise and conduct himself with decorum befitting his office,” the statement added.
