Court stops Obaseki from participating in PDP governorship primary

Trouble looms for Edo state governor, Godwin Obaseki, as a Federal High Court on Monday, June 22, stopped him from taking part in the PDP governorship primary, a report by P.M News has stated.

Justice E.A. Obile of the Federal High Court in Port Harcourt banned the newest member of the PDP from participating in the party’s primary election scheduled for Thursday, June 25.

The motion filed by a member of the opposition, Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama, is seeking a court order to stop Secondus and PDP from allowing Obaseki to buy the forms for the Edo state governorship primary.

The party’s national chairman, Prince Uche Secondus, PDP, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), chairman of the party screening committee, Kingsley Chinda, other members of the committee, and Obaseki were listed as defendants in the case.

Justice Obile granted the interim injunction as requested as hearing in the matter case has been adjourned till Wednesday, June 24.

The PDP had earlier announced a waiver for Obaseki who joined the party on Friday, June 19, to enable him to participate in the primary election. Obaseki was screened by the party’s committee on Saturday, June 20.

Recall that a frontline aspirant of the PDP in Edo state, Gideon Ikhine, stepped down from the governorship primaries for Governor Obaseki.

Ikhine, a Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (FNSE), announced his decision on Monday, June 22, at his campaign secretariat in the state capital, Benin.

Governor Obaseki, the PDP state party chairman, Dr Tony Aziegbemi, and other party leaders from across the state were in attendance at the briefing. Ikhine said Obaseki’s defection to the party was God’s great answer to the party and his aspiration.

Ahead of the PDP primary, Governor Obaseki’s chances have become brighter after he met with key stakeholders within the opposition party.

Until Obaseki’s ordeal, the PDP was said to have settled for Hon. Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama, a member of the House of Representatives and chairman, committee on culture and tourism as their preferred flag bearer.

Meanwhile, PDP declared that the All Progressives Congress (APC)’s candidate for the Edo governorship election, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, is not a match for any of its aspirants ahead of the poll.

Ize-Iyamu, a former PDP chieftain, emerged as a candidate of the APC ahead of the election on Monday, June 22.
