The Peoples Democratic Party has formally announced the death of the Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, who reportedly collapsed at the Government House in Yenagoa on Thursday afternoon.
The party, in a statement issued late Thursday by its National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong, said it received the news “with deep shock” and described the late deputy governor as “a trusted, faithful party man.”
“The National Working Committee, led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, and indeed the entire membership of our great party, especially our faithful members in Bayelsa State, are in profound grief,” the statement read.
The PDP added that Senator Ewhrudjakpo was “an honest and consistent politician who believed in and practised politics with principle. He was a person of conviction, not convenience; a leader whose life was anchored on belief, integrity, and strength of character. He held firmly to these virtues until his final moments.”
The party also extended condolences to the government and people of Bayelsa State, noting the gravity of the loss.
“We are deeply saddened by the passing of this hero of political integrity, and we pray that God grants his soul eternal rest.
We express our heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Bayelsa State on this painful and irreparable loss.”
Born on September 5, 1965, Ewhrudjakpo served as deputy governor from 2020 until his death in 2025. Prior to that, he represented Bayelsa West in the 9th National Assembly between 2019 and 2020.
His death is regarded as a major blow to the state and the PDP, where he was widely respected for his integrity and commitment to principled politics.
