The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has confirmed a fire incident at one of its offices within the Abuja headquarters, coming days before the scheduled January 2026 rollout of Nigeria’s new tax laws.

The incident was disclosed on Saturday by Mr Sikiru Akinola, spokesperson to the Executive Chairman of the agency, Mr Zacch Adedeji.

According to him, the fire occurred on the fourth floor of the complex but was swiftly detected by security personnel on duty, prompting an immediate emergency response.

Firefighters from the Federal Capital Territory Fire Service, supported by other emergency responders, moved quickly to the scene and successfully contained the blaze, preventing it from spreading to other sections of the headquarters.

“We are grateful to report that no lives were lost in the incident,” Akinola said.

“However, a number of offices on the affected floor sustained damage.”

He said investigations had commenced to determine the cause of the fire, with early indications pointing to a possible electrical fault.

“In the meantime, all internal safety protocols are being thoroughly reviewed and strengthened to mitigate against future occurrences,” he said.
