Sheikh Gumi drags two to court over alleged defamatory Facebook posts

Islamic scholar, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has dragged two individuals before a Chief Magistrate’s Court in Kaduna State, seeking criminal summons against them over alleged conspiracy, attempt to cause public disturbance and defamation of character.

The suit was filed at the Chief Magistrate’s Court sitting on Ibrahim Taiwo Road, Kaduna.

The respondents were identified as George Udom and Bello Isiaka.

Gumi told the court that the two allegedly published a post tagged “Breaking News” on their respective Facebook pages on Tuesday morning, claiming that the family of the Minister of Defence, retired Gen. Christopher Musa, would be eliminated if military operations against bandits were not halted.

He alleged that the statement was falsely credited to him, with his photograph used alongside the post, thereby creating the impression that he authored and issued the threat.

The cleric said the publication triggered a flurry of calls from concerned members of the public who believed he was behind the message and was attempting to intimidate the defence minister.

He maintained that the post portrayed him as a threat to public peace, a claim he said runs contrary to his long-standing image as a religious leader known for preaching peace and coexistence.

According to him, the publication was capable of inciting public unrest in parts of Kaduna State, particularly Southern Kaduna, and could also endanger his life by presenting him as a suspect in the event of any attack on the minister’s family.

Gumi further argued that the actions of the defendants amounted to an attempt to disturb public peace and to maliciously defame his character.

He added that the alleged acts contravened Sections 59, 57, 372, 116 and 117 of the Penal Code Law of Kaduna State, 2017.

The application, dated December 24, 2025, was filed by a team of lawyers led by Suleiman Lere, with the court urged to summon the defendants to answer to the allegations.
