Court sends man to one-year jail for enticing, blackmailing married woman in Plateau

An Area Court in Jos, Plateau State, on Thursday sentenced a man, Abdullahi Usman, to 12 months’ imprisonment for wooing a married woman and attempting to extort her through blackmail.

Police prosecutor, Inspector Ibrahim Gokwat, told the court that the case was lodged at Angwan Rogo Police Station on November 24, 2025, by the woman’s husband, Hamza Aliyu.

According to Gokwat, Usman, a neighbour to the couple, had persistently contacted the woman, pressuring her to meet him in a hotel for a romantic affair.

When she refused, he allegedly threatened to expose her to her husband and falsely accuse her of extra-marital escapades and multiple abortions.

The court heard that the woman disclosed the threats to her husband, prompting the couple to record subsequent phone conversations. The recordings, the prosecutor said, were tendered as key evidence.

Gokwat added that during questioning, the accused admitted to the offence and asked for forgiveness.

In her ruling, the presiding judge, Justice Irene Pati, held that the prosecution had established a clear case against Usman, noting that the offences contravened provisions of the Plateau State Penal Code Law, 2017.

She subsequently sentenced him to 12 months in prison with an option of ₦50,000 fine.
