Workers of the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), Ondo State, have issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Ondo State Government and the university authorities to settle their outstanding welfare entitlements, threatening industrial action if their demands are not met.
The ultimatum followed a congress of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) in the institution.
The resolution was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the congress and jointly signed by the Chairman of SSANU, AAUA chapter, Comrade A. Olutayo Ogungbeni; the Chairman of NASU, Comrade Clement Abiodun Ekundayo; and the Chairman of NAAT, Comrade Johnson O. Fagbemi.
The unions accused the state government and the university management of neglecting several years of unpaid entitlements, including arrears arising from the implementation of the national minimum wage and other agreed benefits.
The communiqué stated, “PAY US OUR OUTSTANDING ARREARS WITHIN FOURTEEN (14) DAYS: Arising from the meeting of the Congress of Joint Action Committee (JAC) of SSANU, NASU, and NAAT of Adekunie Ajasin University Akungba, held on the Thursday, 15th January 2026. The Congress discussed extensively on the various issues affecting the welfare of our members as follows:
“Implementation of recommendations of Career Structure Committee; Payment of all the outstanding Arrears of Gratuities of our retired members; Payment of Think Parties’ Deductions (Cooperatives, WEMA Bank loans, and Union check off does).
“Payment of 5 years outstanding Excess Workload Arrears (2015-2019); Payment of all outstanding Promotion Arrears (2022-2024); Payment of 54 months 2019 National Minimum Wage Arrears; Payment of 18 months 25%/35% Salary Increment; and Payment of outstanding Entitlement of Re-absorbed staff.
“After the various welfare issues had been extensively deliberated upon, the Congress resolved as follows:
“That henceforth, all the outstanding arrears as identified above should be paid with immediate effect
“That failure to meet up with the demand for payment of our arrears within fourteen (14) days shall lead to industrial crisis in the University
“That the Ondo State Government, the University Governing Council and the Management should note the above for further necessary action, please.”
The unions warned that any failure to address the issues within the stipulated period would disrupt academic and administrative activities at the university, urging the state government and relevant authorities to act promptly to avert a shutdown.
