Gospel reached millions in 24 hours through my tattoo – Lagos pastor says

The Lead Pastor of David Christian Centre, Lagos, Pastor Kingsley Okonkwo, has defended his decision to adorn his arm with a Bible-inspired tattoo, saying it served as an unconventional but effective tool for evangelism.

Okonkwo, who is also a popular relationship coach, unveiled the tattoo in a video shared on his official Instagram page on Saturday to mark his 50th birthday.

The inscription, written in Roman numerals as “III: XVI,” represents John 3:16, one of the most widely referenced verses in the Bible.

The video, which opens with a voice-over reciting the scripture, quickly gained traction across social media platforms, sparking widespread debate among followers and critics alike.

Reacting to the controversy in a Facebook post on Sunday, the cleric said the focus on the tattoo had caused many to miss what he described as its wider impact.

“My religious brothers and sisters were busy judging over tattoo; they didn’t notice that the gospel (John 3:16) was preached to millions in 24hrs by almost all blogs,” he wrote.

He added that further explanations would be given later, while also inviting members and followers to his praise party and thanksgiving service.

PUNCH Online had earlier reported that the tattoo generated mixed reactions online, with some users questioning its appropriateness for a pastor. Critics cited biblical injunctions against making marks on the body, arguing that clerics should model strict adherence to scripture.

Others, however, took a more moderate stance, suggesting that while the act might be permissible, it was not necessarily edifying.

A large number of followers also applauded the pastor, describing the tattoo as a bold and creative expression of faith, with some referencing biblical passages to support their views.

Okonkwo, known for his modern and youth-oriented approach to Christian teachings on relationships and marriage, continued to share images from his birthday celebrations, describing the milestone as the “big Five O.”

Addressing the ongoing debate, the pastor urged critics and supporters alike to remain calm, noting that the issue would be discussed after the weekend’s celebrations.

By framing the tattoo as a conversation starter rather than a provocation, Okonkwo said his intention was to spread the Gospel beyond the walls of the church, using contemporary platforms to reach a wider audience.
