No fewer than seven persons lost their lives, while 70 others sustained injuries in a lone road crash that occurred on personsalong the Hadejia Road axis of Kano State.

The Federal Road Safety Corps confirmed the incident, which also left 28 passengers unhurt.

In a statement issued in Kano, the Sector Commander, Idris Muhammed-Lawal, said the crash happened at about 8:35 a.m. at Kwanar Danja, involving a commercial DAF trailer conveying both passengers and goods.

Muhammed-Lawal, who spoke through the command’s Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Labaran, said the FRSC received a distress call shortly after the crash and deployed a rescue team to the scene within minutes.

According to the statement, a total of 105 persons were involved in the accident.

“Seven persons died, while 70 others, comprising 55 males and 15 females, sustained varying degrees of injuries,” the sector commander said.

He explained that preliminary investigations showed that the crash was caused by excessive speeding and loss of control, worsened by the unsafe practice of conveying passengers alongside goods.

The sector commander added that the incident was a single-vehicle crash and that the condition of the road was good at the time of the accident.

The injured victims were evacuated to different medical facilities across the state.

These included Sir Sunusi Specialist Hospital in Gezawa, where 24 victims were taken; General Hospital, Gezawa, which received another 24 victims; Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital, which admitted 20 injured persons; and Abdullahi Wase Specialist Hospital, Nasarawa, where seven victims were treated.

Muhammed-Lawal expressed sympathy with the families of the deceased and wished those injured a quick recovery.

He warned motorists, particularly commercial drivers, against speeding, reckless driving and the illegal conveyance of passengers in goods vehicles, noting that such practices continued to lead to avoidable tragedies.

The FRSC boss also urged road users to obey traffic regulations and adopt safety-conscious behaviour to protect lives and property.
