The Cross River State Police Command has recovered eight decomposed bodies from a mortuary facility in Isong Inyang Community, Akamkpa Local Government Area of the state, and arrested one suspect in connection with the discovery.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, ASP Eitokpah Sunday, disclosed this in a statement issued on Friday, saying the remains were found at an embalmment hall located along the Calabar–Ikom Highway on February 13, 2026.
According to him, the police acted on credible intelligence received around 11:56 a.m. regarding the presence of corpses at the facility.
He said operatives were immediately deployed to the scene to verify the information.
“Upon arrival, officers discovered eight dried corpses inside the embalmment hall,” the statement read.
Sunday added that swift police intervention led to the arrest of a suspect identified as Sunday Ben Reuben, said to be a native of Nsit Ibom in Akwa Ibom State.
Preliminary findings, he noted, indicate that the suspect works as a mortician with Enghaut Company Mortuary in Akamkpa Local Government Area.
The police spokesperson said the suspect remains in custody while a detailed investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and whether any laws were breached.
He urged residents to remain calm and refrain from speculation, assuring that the command would provide further updates as investigations progress.
