Nigerian church expels newly wed wife for refusing sex with husband

An Abuja-based ministry, Holiness Revival Movement Worldwide, has expelled a newly married woman, identified as Oyiza, from its fold for allegedly declining to consummate her marriage with her husband, Isaac.

The couple, who resided in Ibadan, Oyo State, were wedded on September 6, 2025, after completing traditional rites in Okene, Kogi State, and a court ceremony in Ibadan. Oyiza hails from Kogi State.

Trouble, however, reportedly set in shortly after the wedding as the bride allegedly resisted her husband’s advances, insisting she had no affection for him. She was also said to have accused her mother of compelling her into the union.

It was gathered that efforts by both families and church leaders to resolve the dispute proved abortive, with the bride said to have maintained her stance.

In a video published on the church’s YouTube channel in February, the International Director of the ministry, Pastor Paul Rika, announced her excommunication after what he described as five months of unsuccessful mediation.

During the announcement, the cleric criticised her decision and declared that the church had severed ties with her.

He further urged members to pray over the situation, alleging that her conduct had brought embarrassment to the congregation.

The pastor questioned her decision to proceed with the marriage despite allegedly lacking affection for her husband, referencing cultural expectations surrounding matrimony.

Isaac, in his account, maintained that Oyiza initially agreed when he expressed his intention to marry her, prompting the church’s marriage committee to approve preparations for the wedding.

He, however, disclosed that months before the ceremony, she began expressing reservations, saying she had lost interest.

According to him, both the committee and family members counselled her, after which she reportedly indicated she was ready to proceed.

The marriage was subsequently formalised following the traditional and court ceremonies, with photographs from the event showing the couple in celebratory mood alongside friends and church members.

Isaac said the situation deteriorated almost immediately after the wedding, alleging that his wife renewed her objections and declined intimacy.

He added that he exercised patience, hoping the situation would improve.

He further claimed that during counselling sessions involving church leaders, Oyiza remained firm in her position, allegedly repeating that there was “no love, no joy, no peace” in the relationship.

The husband also alleged that she accused him of attempted rape whenever he initiated intimacy, a development that deepened the crisis.

As of the time of filing this report, there was no indication that Oyiza had publicly responded to the allegations.
