Rwanda Police caution Nigerian content creator over roadside filming

The Rwanda National Police has cautioned a Nigerian content creator, Joe Bassey, after he shared a video of himself sitting on a public road in Kigali to showcase the country’s clean streets.

In the viral clip, Bassey was seen seated directly on the roadway while filming, a move that attracted widespread reactions on social media and drew the attention of authorities.

Responding to the video, the police acknowledged the apparent positive motive behind the content but stressed that the act contravened traffic safety regulations and exposed both the creator and other road users to danger.

The law enforcement agency warned that occupying an active roadway for content creation, regardless of intention, amounts to a breach of safety rules and could result in avoidable accidents.

In a statement shared on its official platform, the police said, “Hello, while we appreciate the good intentions behind this clip, recording content in the roadway is unsafe and violates road safety regulations, as it puts road users at risk.

For everyone’s safety, we advise that filming be done in safe areas. Thank you.”

The police further used the incident to remind social media influencers and members of the public to adhere strictly to safety guidelines, urging content creators to prioritise public safety above the pursuit of viral moments.
