A female passenger has lost her life while six others sustained serious injuries in a road accident at New Castle Bus Stop inward Gbagada along the Oworonsoki-Apapa Expressway in Lagos.

The spokesperson for the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, Adebayo Taofiq, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Sunday.

Taofiq explained that the crash, which occurred over the weekend, involved a Volkswagen commercial bus with registration number LSD 654 XY that reportedly lost control and rammed into a roadside culvert.

According to him, the impact of the collision threw a female passenger out of the moving vehicle onto the expressway.

He added that an oncoming articulated truck approaching the scene could not stop in time and ran over the passenger, killing her instantly.

“The Volkswagen commercial bus veered off the road and crashed violently into a roadside culvert.

The impact of the collision ejected a female passenger onto the expressway, while six other occupants sustained serious injuries, some with multiple fractures,” Taofiq said.

He added that the driver of the bus and five other passengers suffered varying degrees of injuries in the crash.

The LASTMA spokesperson said traffic officials immediately secured the scene to prevent secondary accidents and allow emergency responders to carry out rescue operations.

Personnel of the Lagos State Ambulance Service were said to have evacuated the injured victims to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.

Meanwhile, officials of the Lagos State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit removed the remains of the deceased from the accident scene.

Reacting to the incident, the General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, sympathised with the family of the deceased and wished the injured victims a quick recovery.

He also advised motorists, particularly commercial drivers, to ensure regular maintenance of their vehicles, especially the braking system, to help prevent avoidable road accidents.
