Two teenagers have reportedly died after falling into a pond while attempting to escape from suspected phone snatchers in Kano State.

The incident was confirmed by the Kano State Fire Service in a statement issued on Tuesday by its Public Relations Officer, Saminu Yusif Abdullahi.

Abdullahi said the tragedy occurred around 4:04 p.m. on Friday, March 6, 2026, at Ring Road Kureken Sani in the Kumbotso Local Government Area of the state.

According to him, the agency’s Emergency Response Unit received a distress call from a resident, Muhd Abba, alerting authorities to the situation.

He explained that a rescue team from the fire service headquarters was immediately dispatched to the scene.

Upon arrival, firefighters discovered that two teenagers, both aged 18 and identified as Sadiq Isyaku and Auwal Isyaku, had fallen into a pond.

The victims were retrieved from the water unconscious and were later confirmed dead.

Their remains were subsequently handed over to their father, Ibrahim Shehu, who resides in the Unguwa Uku area.

The fire service said preliminary findings suggested that the teenagers accidentally fell into the pond while trying to flee from individuals suspected to be phone snatchers.

According to the statement, the victims were being chased when they ran into the pond while attempting to escape.

In a related development, the fire service said it rescued a man who fell into a well in Kano Municipal.

Abdullahi said the emergency call was received at about 7:12 p.m. on Monday, March 9, 2026, from a resident, Abdullahi Aminu, who reported that someone had fallen into a well at Durumin Zungura near Assahabul Khahafi.

He said firefighters were swiftly deployed to the location and found a man, identified as 40-year-old Shitu Balarabe, trapped inside the well.

The rescue team successfully brought him out alive and handed him over to his brother, Jamilu Balarabe, who lives in Durumin Zungura, Kano City.

The fire service expressed condolences to the bereaved family and urged residents to take preventive measures to avoid similar incidents.

It advised parents to ensure children and youths stay away from open water while also urging property owners to construct protective barriers and install covers on wells to prevent accidents.
