The Ogun State Police Command has opened an investigation into the death of Victoria Ariyo, a female corps member serving in Abeokuta South Local Government Area, who reportedly died following complications from an alleged abortion procedure.

Ariyo’s remains were said to have been laid to rest at Kobape Cemetery along Kobape-Sagamu Road in Abeokuta.

Sources indicated that she had terminated a pregnancy, which led to medical complications resulting in her death.

The tragedy comes less than a month after another corps member, Adeleye Mary, also serving in Abeokuta South LG, died under mysterious circumstances.

Adeleye had been completing her mandatory one-year service at a television station in the state capital prior to her sudden demise. The two women were reportedly close friends.

A source told our correspondent, “Mary was found lifeless at her residence, which is near her PPA, and the cause of her death remains unclear. Victoria, buried on Tuesday, reportedly died from complications following an abortion. We also learnt that an NYSC official, allegedly involved in a romantic relationship with Victoria that led to the pregnancy, has been taken into custody by police at the state command headquarters in Eleweran, Abeokuta.”

Confirming the investigation, the state police spokesperson, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, said, “I can confirm that the case of Victoria Ariyo’s death is being handled by the state Criminal Investigation Department.” He, however, declined to comment on the reported arrest of any suspect.

When approached for comment, the Ogun State NYSC Public Relations Officer, Mr Emmanuel Igba, said he was unaware of the incidents, noting that he had been on leave and would not return until April.

Efforts to reach the state NYSC Coordinator, Mrs Olayinka Nasamu, were unsuccessful, as calls and messages to her office remained unanswered at the time of filing this report.
