The Federal Road Safety Corps has confirmed the death of a tricycle operator and his female passenger in a fatal road accident in Abia State.
The Sector Commander of the FRSC in the state, Mrs Ngozi Ezeoma, disclosed on Wednesday that the crash occurred on Tuesday at the notorious “Sign Board” junction near Ubani Market in Umuahia, the state capital.
Ezeoma described the incident as tragic, noting that it came barely hours after another fatal accident along Opobo Road in Aba, where a motorcyclist was first hit by a tricycle and later crushed by an oncoming truck. The tricycle rider reportedly fled the scene.
She further revealed that the “Sign Board” junction had recorded at least three similar accidents in 2025, leading to multiple fatalities.
The FRSC boss reiterated the corps’ warning to motorists and other road users to adhere strictly to traffic regulations to curb avoidable deaths.
She urged drivers, particularly operators of heavy-duty vehicles and tricycles, to shun speeding and exercise caution, especially at identified black spots.
According to her, the remains of the victims had been evacuated and deposited at a mortuary in Umuahia, while efforts were ongoing to track down the fleeing truck driver involved in the latest crash.
An eyewitness, who identified himself simply as Uche, said the accident occurred on Tuesday evening along the Umuahia–Ubani–Uzuakoli Road when a speeding truck rammed into the tricycle.
He explained that the impact forced the tricycle under the truck, killing both occupants instantly.
The witness added that the truck driver fled immediately after realising the victims had died.
