Trouble as UK court jails Nigerian for life over woman’s murder

A United Kingdom court has sentenced a 24-year-old Nigerian, Chukwuemeka Ahanonu, to life imprisonment for the murder of a 56-year-old woman, Nila Patel, following a violent attack in Leicester.

It was gathered from Leicestershire Police that the incident occurred on June 24, 2025, along Infirmary Road after the convict crashed his car while allegedly under the influence of cannabis.

Ahanonu was said to have been driving recklessly across the city centre, swerving between lanes, running traffic lights and endangering pedestrians before losing control of his vehicle.

After the crash, he reportedly fled the scene and attacked Patel, who had just disembarked from a bus and was heading home.

He was later apprehended, and a search of his vehicle revealed cannabis packaged in dealer bags valued at over £3,000, alongside three mobile phones.

The defendant had earlier admitted to charges of dangerous driving, possession of cannabis with intent to supply, and assaulting an emergency worker after biting a female police officer.

Following the attack, security personnel at the nearby Leicester Royal Infirmary subdued him until police officers arrived, while medical personnel attended to the victim, who sustained critical injuries, including severe head trauma. She died two days later, leading to his re-arrest on June 26, 2025, on suspicion of murder.

At the conclusion of his trial at Leicester Crown Court, the jury returned a guilty verdict on Monday, after which he was sentenced on Tuesday.

The Senior Investigating Officer, Detective Inspector Emma Matts, described the incident as a brutal and unprovoked attack on an unsuspecting victim.

She noted that the convict was not known to the deceased, adding that CCTV footage capturing his driving prior to the crash was disturbing.

Matts also commended members of the public who intervened, stating that their prompt actions in restraining the suspect and assisting the victim were instrumental to the investigation.

In a related development, two Ireland-based men, Francis Ogbuefi, 42, and Steven Silvester, 32, were sentenced to a combined 16 years’ imprisonment for their roles in an international money laundering operation.

According to Raidió Teilifís Éireann, the pair were prosecuted after an investigation by the Garda National Economic Crime Bureau, with Ogbuefi receiving a nine-year jail term and Silvester sentenced to seven and a half years.

Authorities said the cases underscore rising concerns over cross-border financial crimes involving foreign nationals.
